MOLLY – Косатка в небе [Killer Whale In The Sky] (2019) July 27, 2019 08:00
Killer Whale In The Sky is the debut solo album from MOLLY (Olga Seryabkina) the former lead singer (and the last remaining original member) of the Russian pop girl group Serebro. I'll admit I'm not overly familiar with Serebo's music but from of precursory examination they are a slightly tamer version of the Ukraine's now defunct group NikitA.
One thing to keep in mind with Eastern European pop music is it's a completely different animal compared to pop music from almost anywhere else which is usually very light, bubbly and upbeat. Pop music from Russia and Ukraine (at least what I've been exposed to, and what seems to be popular at the moment) is much darker. Such is the case with MOLLY's debut album Killer Whale In The Sky which could ultimately be the soundtrack to a Cold War action thriller, or some dystopian Blade Runner style film from the 80's.
With a fair amount of electronic / disco style elements the album starts fairly average for my tastes with only a couple songs like Косатка в небе (the title track) and Mama standing out as being the catchiest and most memorable songs in the first two thirds of the album. Then by the last third the album really starts picking up traction with an 80's style synth style track Набери мой номер [Dial My Number] featuring some catchy Russian style beats.
Overall, I like the album, I think a lot of the songs have a very similar feel and can at times make it seem a little too one dimensional. Perhaps if the last few tracks had been mixed in a little more evenly throughout this would have helped to break up that feeling. For me this is an album I think will likely grow on me over time, and unless you're a hardcore Serebro fan that will probably be the case for most listeners not familiar with MOLLY. She knows how to do music videos though.
